Dear Friend of CAAS,
Deusmira recently found her family facing a crisis triggered by circumstances now familiar to many Somerville families: the house in which she’d been renting an apartment for many years was sold to a developer. Her family received notice of eviction. This news coincided with a sudden loss of family income. Deusmira’s daughter, Bianca, was midway through her senior year at Somerville High School. She feared displacement and disruption to her education.
Deusmira came to CAAS’ Homelessness Prevention Program seeking a solution to her immediate crisis and hoping for a more sustainable housing solution.
CAAS Housing Advocates negotiated an agreement in Housing Court whereby Deusmira’s family was able to stay in the apartment while securing public housing through a “no fault eviction” emergency application.
Today, the Debarros family lives happily and securely in affordable housing at Clarendon Hill. Bianca will graduate as an honors student from Somerville High School in June and is currently considering a number of college offers!
We are deeply grateful for your support; we can’t do this without you! Your gift today helps keep families in their homes, supports Head Start for low-income children, and builds a stronger community. If you would like to visit our offices or see our programs in action, please let us know.
David Gibbs, Executive Director
P.S. Deusmira's family is now safe and secure because of generous gifts like yours. Please contribute today to the stability of the 30 families facing eviction that CAAS will serve this month.
